Our History
A Tudor Heritage
Nestled on Old Road East in the historic town of Gravesend, the Prince of Orange stands as one of Kent's most characterful public houses. With its distinctive Tudor facade, exposed oak beams, and centuries of stories woven into its walls, the building has served as a gathering place for the local community for generations.
From its origins as a coaching inn welcoming travellers along the Thames, the pub has witnessed the ebb and flow of Gravesend's rich maritime history. The name itself pays homage to William of Orange, whose arrival in England reshaped the nation's destiny — a fitting namesake for a pub that has always been at the heart of its community.
“We didn't just take on a pub — we inherited a piece of Gravesend's soul. Every beam, every brick has a story, and we're here to write the next chapter.”
The Prince of Orange Team
A New Chapter
Under new ownership, the Prince of Orange has embarked on an exciting new chapter — one that honours the building's storied past while bringing a fresh, modern food philosophy to Gravesend. The vision is simple: to create a place where exceptional food, carefully crafted drinks, and genuine hospitality come together in a setting that feels both timeless and alive.
The Tudor character that makes this pub so special has been lovingly preserved — the oak beams, the inglenook fireplace, the warm glow of candlelight on aged brick. What's new is the ambition in the kitchen: seasonal menus that change with the calendar, wood-fired pizzas with hand-stretched dough, and a bar programme that goes well beyond the ordinary.
Our Philosophy
At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to quality and provenance. Our kitchen team works with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients wherever possible — from the Kent farms that supply our vegetables to the day-boats that bring in our fish. We believe that great food starts with great ingredients, and we take the time to find the best.
Everything is made in-house: our pizza dough is proved for 48 hours, our sauces are built from scratch, and our desserts are baked fresh each day. We work closely with local suppliers and independent producers because we believe in supporting the community that has supported this pub for centuries.
Whether you're joining us for a quick lunch, a leisurely weekend dinner, or a lively Saturday night, our promise is the same: honest food, served with warmth, in a setting you won't forget.
